Brazilian bossa nova music from the 21st century and British hard rock from the 1970s is what will be compared in this musical links investigation. The specific songs chosen to be compared are "Maria Moita" by Rosalia de Souza, and "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple, respectively. The cultures these two songs come from are very distinct from each other, but after listening to both songs it is apparent that they have certain obvious similarities. One main link is the use of the exact same interval progression as the primary melody in the songs. The second link is that they are both homophonic, with one melody and most chordal accompaniment. But first, a little background on the styles of music:
Bossa nova was developed in the 1950s and '60's in Brazil, and is jazz music fused with samba. Harmonically, it is more complex, and in terms of percussion, there is less of it.
Hard rock is a sub-genre of rock, developed in the '70s, but developed from late '60s genres like blues rock and garage rock. It is characterized by a heavy use of distorted, agressive-sounding guitars and keyboard instruments.
